Why would a guy breakup after purposefully hurting his girl and then want her back after?

I brought up the fact that he's been very emotionally invested in his new female friend that I constantly witnessed him texting her and even calling her everyday. He told me they were just friends but I told him it's very rude the fact that he kept going at it knowing how pissed I was. Btw she had a livein partner too. He broke off with me after he couldn't stand my anger and yet comes crawling back...why?
