Algebra 1 Problem?
Write and simplify an expression for the situation. “ Mario volunteers one day each month at the animal shelter helping to clean cages and walk the dogs. On d days, he cleans cages for five hours per day. On the other days, he walks dogs for 90 minutes. Write an expression for the total number of hours Mario volunteers each year (12 months) at the animal shelter.”

Mario is only volunteering 1 day each month for a total of 12 days.
If 'd' is the number of days he cleans cages then '12-d' would be the remaining days when he walks the dogs.
To find the total hours, we multiply each of these by the number of hours each task takes.
Cleaning cages (5 hours) --> 5d
Walking dogs (90 minutes = 1.5 hours) --> 1.5(12 - d)
Let's add those together and simplify:
5d + 1.5(12 - d)
= 5d + 18 - 1.5d
= (5d - 1.5d) + 18
= 3.5d + 18
3.5d + 18

5D + 1.5 (12-D) = Hours
