How much water needs to be added to 15.0 mL of a concentrated solution of HCl(aq) to lower its concentration to 1.00 M? ?

[concentrated HCl(aq)]=11.6 M.

The answer is: Water added = 159 mL

    M1V1 = M2V2

    M1 = 11.6 M

    V1 = 15 ml

    M2 = 1.0 M

    V2 = x

    15(11.6) = 1(x)

    x = 174 ml

    You need 174 ml total. Since you begin with 15 ml, you subtract 15 ml from the final volume. 

    174 - 15 = 159 ml
