Newer 8mm tapes aren't playing on Sony hi8 camcorder?

I'm digitizing old 8mm tapes. Oddly enough all the old tapes from the early 90s and 80s work just fine. However, all the tapes from the late 90s and 2000s will not play. The tape will load fine, the film will actually roll when I press play. It just won't show anything. I notice the older tapes say "P6-60MP", whereas the new "P6-120MP". Does this have anything to do with it?

If not, do you have any suggestions?

Were the newer ones shot on 'Digital 8'?  I cannot remember when Digital 8 came in, but the date of late 1990s seems about right.

Your Hi8 cannot play those digital tapes.

Did the original camcorder have different recording modes - eg. a "high quality" or conversely a "long play" mode?

Those would mean different recorded formats on the tapes, which would need playing back on a machine that included those same modes.
