Help transferring VHS tapes to MacBook ?

I have a Sony digital 8 handyman that I’ve used to film and want to transfer the tapes to my MacBook but I don’t know what wires I need. I have the newest version of the MacBook meaning I don’t have a fire wire. I attached some pictures to give references of what inputs there are. Thanks for the help!

Your question says you have VHS. Digital 8 is Digital 8 - not VHS. There is no VHS converter that will allow a VHS tape player to play that tape. Digital 8 is, well, Digital and VHS is analog. The tape cases are very different (and D8 is different from VHS-C, too).

In the image you provided, see the middle plug? That is a 4-pin Firewire (also called IEEE1394 or DV).

You are correct, your MacBook does not have a firewire port - but it should have a Thunderbolt port. It may not, we don't know which MacBook you have.

To connect the DV/Firewire port on the camcorder to a Mac's Thunderbolt port, you need a cable and an adapter tail.

The adapter tail is a Thunderbolt to Firewire like

Then you need a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable, like:

With the camcorder power OFF, connect the cable to the DV port on the camcorder to the adapter and connect the adapter to the MacBook. If the computer was off, now you can turn it on. The camcorder should remain off until the MacBook gets to a stable desktop. The put the camcorder into "Play" mode. Rewind the tape using the control on the camcorder.

Launch iMovie. It will control the camcorder. In iMovie, Import or Capture the video. This is real-time capture. 60 minutes of video will consume about 14 gig of hard drive space - and take 60 minutes to pull into the computer. Video and audio.

If that does not work, you need to go tot the Sony site and identify the AV connector cables to transfer using analog audio and video. I use an Elgato video transfer adapter when i need to digitize analog audio/video.

There is a USB port on your Digital 8 camcorder too - it will only transfer stills and there are no available/maintained drivers for that.
