I don't have to do that with my phone.

Because when you set up the phone you put in a security pin. If you do not want that you’ll have to go into the settings and turn it off. However if you do so you will turn off any other security said if you have such as face recognition, touch ID, basically anything biometric. The pin is a fallbackIn case those don’t work so you don’t get permanently locked out of your phone.

Because that is how YOU set your phone up. You wanted it to lock after a certain amount of time, and YOU, also setup the password, pattern or number code to unlock the phone, once it locked.
