If this is for a math class, most likely they are asking for an estimate of how many of YOUR steps are in a mile. Measure the length of your step. One way to do that is to walk on soft dirt or sandy soil, or with wet shoes on the sidewalk, then measure the distance between your steps. Let say that you measure exactly 2 feet.

Knowing that a mile is 5280 feet, that will contain 5280 / 2 steps, or 2640 steps.

But measure your own steps to get your personal answer.

There are also apps that will provide the answer for you, especially accurate if you have a fitbit or other step-measuring device.

A person of average height has a stride length within 2.1 to 2.5 feet; we can say that about 2,000 - 2,500 walking/jogging steps can make up a mile.

Your age does not matter.. It's the length of your step that is the important thing..

mile = a thousand steps (both feet)

Came originally from the Roman mile, 'mille passus', literary "a thousand paces".

But in your question, you need to be clear about what you mean by a "step"!

If a single foot fwd, then 2,000 steps. But I prefer 1,000 paces.

Remember it is a "Double step----"A One", "and Two, "and Three". . . 1000 (roman) double steps make a MILE That's why it is called a Mile from Mille---1000, in the first place. Our single step is generally HALF our height, so a double step for a 5 foot Roman was about 5 feet (or perhaps a small amount more).making it 5000 feet. Yes, People have different step sizes, but it averaged out over time and many soldiers.

So generally speaking a Mile, has 1000 double steps in it, about 5000 feet and a bit more.----BUT close enough for the old days. When we got serious about measuring, however, especially in England, the Mile was OFFICIALLY declared 5280 feet--to make it evenly divided into FURLONGS.
