Why are psychiatric hospitals open during this pandemic?

A lot of places closed, but why not psychiatric hospitals?

I would think if one place other than regular hospitals would be open, it would be psychiatric hospitals. They might be more likely to harm or kill themselves or others, and that could result in more need for an already overwhelmed hospital.

General hospital are not closed during the pandemic, either.

People are still having babies and heart attacks as well as mental breakdowns.

    Why?

They are considered necessary, like grocery stores. When someone is mentally ill, they NEED the hospital. That should be obvious. Do you understand what mental illness is? and how devastating it is for families?

Most hospitals are open.  What hospitals do you know of that are closed?

The same is true of Psych hospitals.

This is a truly unintelligent question.

Patients who are in need of mental health care may be deemed a risk to themselves or to the public. So in a sense they can be used as prisons to monitor the person and keep other people and themselves safe.

When their illness subsides or their behaviour changes to a point where they are considered not a risk (predictability) for a period of time, they will probably either be discharged or gain rights such as leave for a day or two.

Other more chronic patients who need integration back into society may be moved to an outpatient hospital or residential setting where they can still be monitored but can have higher levels of independence.

The hospitals during the patients stay should offer treatment in the form of psychotherapy, medication and a care plan.

Not sure if you've ever seen an acute psychiatric ward, especially for people suffering from psychotic symptoms but it is like a circus of very strange and sometimes agressive people and who need this kind of "treatment".

My local psychiartric hospital had stopped some extra outpatient groups and close the facilities during the lockdown and they also banned smoking, barred visitors as well as reducing leave for patients off the ward. Sometimes entirely.

Would you suggest they close down prisons?

Why shouldn't they be?   You don't seem to be very good at the whole thinking thing.

Same reason emergency rooms and inpatient rehab centers are open. They’re essential medical services.

I’d say that’s pretty essential. What do you suggest we do with people who have mental health breakdowns? Some of them are suicidal or homicidal. They need help.

Would you prefer crazy people roaming the streets? It's an essential service.
