What is the simplest French sauce to cook?

    Mornay.   Make white sauce,  add cheese.

    Bechamel sauce.

    It can used as-is, or as the basis for Cheddar cheese sauce, Creme sauce, Mornay sauce, or Soubise sauce

    Probably a Bechamel or a Tomato sauce-two of the Mother Sauces. 

    Anything beyond that might be an Alfredo sauce.

    Hard to say because it all goes back so far but Bechamel was my first guess until I double-checked the origins and saw that 'white sauce' supposedly originated in Italy. 'Bechamel' is a French word though, so I guess that would be it.
