Probably a Bechamel or a Tomato sauce-two of the Mother Sauces.
Anything beyond that might be an Alfredo sauce.

Hard to say because it all goes back so far but Bechamel was my first guess until I double-checked the origins and saw that 'white sauce' supposedly originated in Italy. 'Bechamel' is a French word though, so I guess that would be it.
