My 23 year old son totally lost his sense of smell & taste with COVID-19.  Any idea how long this might last?

He's on the mend right now with no more fever, back to working remotely online, and has about nine more days of quarantine left in a motel. But he can't taste food, so a sour green apple and red apple taste the same (for example).

I read that damage to the olfactory nerve can be permanent.

Is there any known treatment?

He is slim and athletic with no preexisting conditions.  He does not use alcohol or tobacco.  So far, his roommate (who also tested positive) has no symptoms.

the two of them need to be tested again to make sure it wasn't a false positive
