Connections allow you to bypass the job hunting process. It gets you in the door and you stand a better chance of employment since someone is vouching for you.
Making the most money depends on the geographical area, your expertise, where you are in the organization, and how long you've worked for the company. If you aren't willing to put in lots of work, you won't be making the big money.
If you want to make big money, you need to start your own company. It's a big risk, but if business is succesful, it can be financially rewarding. Working for someone else, you're more likely to make a decent wage as an engineer.
