I think they may have a typo in the question. It should be the limit as x approaches 0 not 1.
lim [e^x-1] / x
Another good hint would be to rewrite 1 as e^0.
lim [e^x-e^0] / (x-0)
This would be the derivative of f(x) = e^x at x = 0.
