Would our house caught fire?

We left something boiling on the stove and the water evaporated and the smoke from the burning food set off the fire alarm. We rushed in there and turned off the stove

It's possible.  It's definitely happened before.

It was entirely possible for the fire to spread.

It is a good habit to set a timer when you have anything cooking on the stove....especially if you are preoccupied or are attempting to multi-task and not pay attention to what is on the stove. My rule is not to leave the kitchen when I am cooking...other than food in the oven, which has an oven timer that turns off when set.
