What type of charger does the iPhone 3G use?

Ive been told its the 30pin connector but my iphone does not have a place to plug that in (the port on it is like microusb but slightyly wider, but still too thin for miniusb)

Unfortunately you do not have an iPhone 3G then, depending on if it would take the lightning connector or not you may not have an iPhone at all.

    30 pin dock connector.

If it has anything else, you have a counterfeit device. There were a number of iPhone lookalikes made. They ran a custom skinned version of Android and were sold by dubious sellers, mostly in China.

Apple has only used 2 types of charging ports on the iPhone: the 30 pin connector and the Lightning connector. The 30 pin connector was used from the first iPhone (2007) up until the iPhone 4S (2011). All iPhones from the iPhone 5 and newer (2012+) use the Lightning connector which is significantly smaller than the 30 pin connector.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on. If it is an iPhone 3G, it has to have a 30 pin connector.

It's the old 30 pin connector that's why, it's slightly different now, it has a place for the old one not the current one. You'll have to search for the old one, they will still be available to buy online mostly.
