How can I make drawings look 'right'?

Every time I try to draw anything using references, the end result looks off and wrong. For example, when I use a reference of an anime character and I try and replicate the image as much as possible, comparing the two drawings at the end just looks strange or unattractive. How can I fix this?

Are you trying to exactly replicate the original or should you be trying to take the essence of the original and apply what you want to it? Perhaps.

So perhaps your drawing should be more you and less reference, because that is what reference means – it is not what you want to achieve, what you want is to achieve your take of it.
