Are common kitchen sponges made of authentic sea sponge, if not where to buy genuine or certified sponge products?

My wife and I are trying to be more eco-friendly and use less artificial mass produced products. Early start on a new years resolution.

Using real sea sponges is anything but eco-friendly. Taking sponges from the sea results in hage damage to reefs and the eradication of sponges from large areas.

Buy regular dish cloths. That can be washed bleached and reused. No plastic sponges to discard and no live and expensive sponges harvested.

Using washable cotton wash/dish cloths is best.

Many art and cosmetics companies sell natural sponges.

Most "artificial" sponges are made from cellulose- a renewable product.

Harvesting sponges DESTROY CORALS.  Leave those guys alone.

If they are cut  into rectangles  and colored blue or yellow or orange then those are synthetic.

This artificial product is not polluting the world as it is reusable.

Being eco friendly does not mean to harvest sea sponges(which are living creatures)just to wipe the walls, floors, car and toss in the trash.     Leave the creatures in the sea.  They are an animal as they eat and breathe.  They just don't swim around.

. Besides the artificial sponges are way more useful and easier to hold and shaped to fit on the end of a sponge mop.  The real ones are just a round blob...about the size of a small childs head and about the same shape.  They are light tan colored and have uneven holes.

Not any more, but you can find real sponges at Whole Foods or Restoration Hardware.  By the way, all artificial things are not automatically bad.  For instance, rayon is often called an "artificial fibre", but it's made of cellulose (like sponges) and not some sort of concoction of plastic.
