Most people serve the bread / rolls with butter on the side, for the diners to help themselves.

Typically, in my country, bread is served with butter at table and the diner butters their own bread.

Let them butter their own bread.

I usually butter bread, it adds to the flavour of the bread and it makes it less dry.

I don't butter bread (not “a bread”) before serving it. I let people take whatever bread they want and butter it themselves.

    Is what “successful”?

You don't butter "a bread", you butter "the bread". Is WHAT successful?
