What's the most efficient way to take notes?

I'm going to the aquarium tomorrow and I want to take notes on the fish and other creatures I see there. What's an efficient way to take notes so I don't hold up my family while I do it? (Please don't say Cornell Method- doesn't work for me, sadly)

take a tape recorder with you. and dictate your notes on it.
