I presume at outpatients - partner had skin cancer removed from face and stitched and covered with dressing and all done at out patients and he went back to work later that day

so THIS WAS UNDER THE SKIN NOT ON THE OUTSIDE?/ ABSCESS ?

the time frame depends on the location of the surgery how much of the body had to be removed and your immune system and how fast you recover from the surgery, the health care provider wants to be able to evaluate the site he/she worked on to be sure its proper and clean and free from any infections.

That's usually an outpatient procedure. I've never known anybody who had to stay in the hospital for it. In my experience you should be in and out within a couple hours.
