If you have a shaft and a bearing which tool would you need to ensure that the bearing would fit the shaft?

    A micrometer, or, actually 2 micrometers. An inside micrometer for the bearing inner diameter and an outside micrometer for the shaft OD.

    If a caged bearing, some sort of combination calipers to measure ID of bearing, OD of shaft. Might have to turn shaft by hand in a lathe with dial indicator to verify the journal is true and not tapered

    If a sleeve or split, like an automobile rod bearing, PlastiGage.

    a sleeve or more to locate the bearing,

    and to push the bearing to the correct position.

    spacer bush and nuts etc

    Start with an ID and OD micrometer. fitting to a particular clearance, TRW clearance gauge.
