why would a +44 number to my mobile drain the battery?

    It would not...

I always save UK phone numbers with the international +44 prefix, so they work either here or from anywhere else in the world, when I'm working in other countries.

It has no effect at all on battery life.

The main thing that affects how quickly the battery drains when using the phone is how strong or weak the signal is to the cell phone tower its working with - the phone automatically use more power the further away it is, to maintain the needed signal quality.

If you are a long way from the tower, or there are obstructions between you and the tower, it means much higher transmit power in the phone and much faster battery drain.
