a) Vx = 100 volts

Replace the inductors with a short and capacitors with an open

The circuit becomes a 120 volt source in series with a 12 ohm resistor in parallel with a 5 amp current source

They are both in parallel with a 20 and 40 ohm resistors in series.

The voltage across the 5 amp current source is 150 volts

b) Vx = 60 volts

Now you have a 120 volt source with a 12 ohm resistor in series, they are in parallel with the 15 ohm resistor, 5 amp source and the series combination of 20 + 40 ohm resistors (60 ohms)

The 15 ohm || 60 ohms resistors = 12 ohms

you have a 120 volt source with 12 ohms in parallel with 5 amp current source which are in parallel with the 12 ohm equivalent resistor. It turns out the current in the equivalent resistance is 7.5 amps. The voltage across the 5 amp current source is 90 volts ( 12 ohm * 7.5 amps). Vx is 2/3 of that
