Can someone recommend me or let me know how I can apply for government grants for my son college next year in 2020?

The 2020-21 FAFSA application cycle opens 10-1-2019; it uses 2018 income data. Both you and your son need to obtain FSA IDs and create passwords. You cannot use the same email address for this - each ID needs its own email address. There are portions of the FAFSA that your son will complete, and portions that you, as a parent, will complete. There is a "school choice" area on the FAFSA where up to 10 schools can be selected to receive the results of his application. Most schools will do NOTHING with the information unless there is a corresponding application for enrollment at the school. If you son applies to attend one or more of the selected schools, the schools' financial aid offices will have the information they need to create a tentative award package. Once your son has financial aid award notices, he can then determine which school to actually attend.

The application for all federal student aid, including grants, is called the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You can complete it online at https://fafsa.gov Make sure you are using the fafsa.gov site, which is free, and not fafsa.com (which has a hefty fee). The FAFSA will ask you to include the school codes of all the schools your son is interested in. Once you submit it, it will be sent to those schools and they will send you a financial aid award letter describing the types and amounts of aid he qualifies for. He'll be eligible for the same amount of federal student aid at all schools, but a typical financial aid package also includes aid from other sources, such as state aid or aid from the school's own resources. When comparing financial aid, it's important to look at the bottom line, not just the amount of aid that is being offered. A school can offer you a huge scholarship, but if they also cost a lot more, then a school that offers you less but also costs less could be a better deal.

All financial aid is awarded by filing an on-line application through FAFSA.

When the student is accepted at a school, they will fill out a FAFSA form (Federal Application for Student Aid). You help by providing your tax information.
You can go to the website at any time and use their online estimator to see what funding your student may be eligible for.

YOU can't do that FOR him. He HAS to do that all by himself.

As soon as you file your tax returns (April 15 is the deadline), you complete the FAFSA form online. The main grant is the Pell Grant.
