We're in a 12 story apartment building - in the summer the trash rooms in the basement can get infested, but we've never had one make it into an upstairs unit. Of course, we have professional pest control: they treat the trash rooms and perimiter of the building with spray 4 times a year. We don't want sprays in our living areas - all they do is put a dab of "goo" on all the water pipes coming through any walls: laundry, kitchen, bathrooms, etc. Apparently the roaches like to travel through the building on the pipes . . . they eat the goo and take it home with them. As said, never had one in our unit in 10 years.
We are carefull: don't leave anything edible out, rinse all dishes and put them in the washer, rinse all the cans & bottles we collect for recyling, kitchen trash/garbage can has a tight fitting lid. Apparently the darn things can smell/detect anything edible.
