Chem Question?

A standard galvanic cell is constructed in which a Cu2+ | Cu half cell acts as the cathode. Which of the following statements are correct?

Hint: Refer to a table of standard reduction potentials.

(Choose all that apply.)

a) In the external circuit, electrons flow from the other compartment to the Cu2+|Cu compartment.

b) Cl2|Cl- could be the other standard half cell.

c) The cathode reaction is Cu2+ + 2e- -> Cu

d) The cathode reaction is Cu -> Cu2+ + 2e-

e) Cr3+|Cr could be the other standard half cell.

    Because the question asks for all that are correct,

    A is correct because the cathode is the site of reduction which requires the input of electrons.

    C is correct because Cu2+ + 2 e- --> Cu is a reduction

    E is also correct. The oxidation of Cr --> Cr3+ + 3 e- coupled with the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu(s) will give a cell a positive voltage.
