Why does nobody mention pressure of population growth as the main cause of global warming and environmental problems?

It is the "elephant in the room".

It is a huge problem, there is nothing that can be done about it and other things demand attention. After a while, people just learn to live with the situation.

    ----- ----- -----

► It is well known in the scientific community that every species on Earth, humans included, will reproduce until their population exceeds the resources needed to sustain it (food, space, etc.) unless something else trims its numbers. It is natural and it has occurred often with humans in historical times. Occurrences of human overpopulation have been local but is now worldwide.

It is also part of nature that after overextending the population, corrections will follow, often by famine during less than optimal seasons of food supply, along with other deaths caused by a weakened population and by acts of desperation. This also has happened with humans and will continue to occur.

For people, famine is only one possibility from a long list of natural and man-made disasters, at least one of which will destroy a very large percentage of the population.

Our population WILL be reduced, that is a certainty. When it occurs, for humans it will be the most terrible tragedy in recorded history.

For nature, it will just be normal processes.

Obviously you haven't been paying attention. Those that believe in significant or harmful AGW typically believe there are too many people. Some propose reductions without any idea what they are proposing and others just acknowledge that they believe we are running out of space and resources. We are the only species that has members that regret their success. There are problems with any species if you increase their numbers. Sadly it seems we have too many lemmings that believe everything they are told to believe.

The entire human race still needs to eat and drink. Farming and agriculture is required. The livestock population is also increasing as is land use for same. The world cannot make the transition to clean energy fast enough, and clean energy requires manufacture and delivery of products as well.

As you know, those terms in the first law are algebraic, and any author who would even include suggestions of free energy from conservative magnetic force fields in their blog is a Nut.

Actually, people bring something like this up every couple of weeks. The answer is that they are related but distinct problems. The current global warming is caused by the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. We could have just as many people using non-greenhouse gas emitting energy sources and just as high an energy use and we would not have this problem.

On the other hand, if our population and energy use per capita keep rising, it's possible that in a few hundred years we would have global warming from waste heat even if we switched to something like nuclear fission or fusion.

Having higher population puts added urgency and stress on existing problems, but it is not necessarily the problem itself.

Fossil fuel use is the main cause of global warming - that there are too many of us of course makes everything worse. But mother nature is used to handling overpopulations - war, pestilence and famine usually do the trick - something to look forward to.

The US contains about 4% of the global population yet produces about 15% of the world's CO2 emissions. Similar figures are found for most Western nations - small populations generating a lot of CO2. So, if we could get the US and EU to implement policies to reduce their populations it might have a big impact on CO2 ...

Is that the sort of thing you mean?

The point is that usually when people start talking about overpopulation they look out to China and India as being indicative of the problem.

But the issue isn't really population (we in the West have manged to punch above our weight in terms of pollution), but economy. We produce lots of CO2 with small populations because we need lots of power for our industries. If we can find other ways of powering economies, those nations with big populations can leap frog past that part of our economic development.

    • And you, again, want government involved in population control? Sure, let's look as China's policy and see how well that worked out.
