Why did did the Democrat party support slavery?

Was it simply because republicans opposed slavery or were there other reasons?

When slavery existed, the Democratic Party was strong in slave owning states.

Slavery was commonplace in our human history, from early in time, and then more recently in north Africa in 700 AD to 1800 AD it was muslim arabs who developed the slave trade using both white europeans prisoners from their piracy and black prisoners from raids on tribal villages. Slavery in the USA was encouraged because of the agricultural industry (cheap labor), and to answer the question the Democrat party was dominated by agricultural interests (slave owners).

It’s an adjective, not a noun. ‘Democratic’ party.

In those days the party was dominated by southern conservatives. The progressive abolitionists who founded the GOP were driven out by the corporate interests along with Theodore Roosevelt and eventually mover to the Democrats, where they worked to pass the civil rights legislation that drove the southern conservatives to abandon their traditional party and move to the Republicans around 1966.

Now the party of racism is the GOP. Ironic, isn't it?

Because they are anti-individualism. They want the government to control your life, rather than yourself. You can still see the residual effects of their craving for government control when you study their affinity for raising taxes.

They like the cheap labor... same as to why they want as many ILLEGALS as they can get.. .

    • The Old Switcharoo! After Reconstruction, pro-slavery Southern Democrats controlled the Southern States. Most blacks were Republicans then. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Southern Dems left the party in droves for the increasingly Conservative Republican party, while Dems got more Progressive.

Money. Why do Republicans want to restore slavery?

Southern Democrats at that time were the more conservative party and wanted to continue slavery including in new states coming in. The opposition to slavery split the Whig party with the antislavery Whigs founding the Republican party, mostly in the north. Pro-slavery Whig founded the short lived American party mostly in the south. Republicans at that time were for more power for the Federal government and Democrats wanting more state sovereignty. Any one who says the parties haven't changed since that time is an idiot.
