I have to read summer books and annotate them, but I cant stand reading and I am bad at annotating?

When I start reading a book, its absolutely horrible. The more I read the more the sense of boredom becomes, its unbearable. But not only do I have to read the books, I have to annotate for them too. And my annotations consist of just re-writing what happened but I know at this level my ELA teacher wont accept that. I don't know how to make reading entertaining and I don't know how to annotate properly.

What are summer books? How many books are you required to read and are you allowed to select the books to read?

Do you get to choose your books? Read "Station Eleven."

You have to solve two problems to allow your summer reading work to proceed smoothly.

First, if you haven't already done so, read a single chapter or two, and make some annotations. Take these to your ELA teacher, and simply say you aren't comfortable with your annotations. She will be glad to do a two-minute correction, and you then use that as model.

Secondly, also take a list of books you might like to read, and ask if they are acceptable.

Some that you may appreciate: "Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians;" "Michael Vey: Prisoner of Cell 25;" "The Great Divorce;" "Code of Conduct;" "In a Sunburned Country," "A Street Cat Named Bob." Most are fiction, some are thrillers, etc. If she approves, well and good; if she demurs, ask her for suggestions.

OK, well, just memorize this sentence, then: "Do you want fries with that?"

I love reading, so I can't relate to your dilemma. I do appreciate that many people hate reading and many more (like me) hate working during vacations.

Do you have Attention Deficit Disorder? Maybe your teacher or your school counsellor can help you get through your assignments if you tell them what's wrong.

Are you assigned certain books or can you read what you want? My niece has ADD and the books she could get through were the goulish sort. Zombies appeal to her imagination.

Ask your teacher what she will accept as "annotation". Better to ask than to try reading her mind. If she is a good teacher, she will appreciate that you asked because asking for clarification is not stupid.

"Roots" is a huge book for someone with ADHD to read -- for anyone to read in less than two months and still have a social life. Does your school authority know you have ADHD and autism? Is there no special ed or tutoring you can get? Would your teacher accept two shorter books in its place?

Simply inform your ELA teacher that you're not a "summer person" and ask him/her if you can wait a couple of months until the winter books come out. With that kind of head start you'll be able to formulate a plan on how you can run away from home and leave all this horror behind. Hope this helped, you poor little soul.

Don't read this summer. Flake out and do as you please. Why bore yourself? What good are grades, anyway?
