I have been to a couple dozen weddings and quite frankly, I have no idea who paid for any of the weddings I attended; except for my own wedding. So, wondering what people think is a waste of time and energy because no one actually cares and besides which, it is none of anyone's business.
Tradition is out the window when it comes to who pays for the wedding. Back in the day, brides slept at home until their wedding night. That is no longer the case as women have careers and are out on their own, physically away from home and financially responsible for themselves, more times than not. So, as far as tradition goes, it no longer exists when financially planning a wedding these days. Also, wedding expenses are now on steroids and over the top expensive.
Any adult getting married is responsible for their own wedding expenses. If family can help, great, if not, plan the wedding you can afford. If you cannot afford a wedding of your dreams, then elope to a great honeymoon location and come home to have a "Marriage Celebration Cocktail Party. There, you just saved $35K.
