Judging by the pathetic whinging of many of the Brits that frequent this forum, they were severely ashamed. And it's something that their wounded collective national consciousness and bruised egos haven't got past to this day. I'm certainly no apologist for the US, but I pity Britons - especially the English, when they are compelled to spew venom at Americans and their country. They deride Yanks for being ignorant and oafish, yet they conveniently avoid the plain and simple fact that they and their country dance to the American fiddle. If Americans are such blithering buffoons, then what does that make the English to serve as their lapdogs for 7 decades running? With each passing year Britain becomes more and more Americanised, in its politics, ideals, thinking, language, culture. The UK is an extension of the US in every conceivable manner save for being an official state. Bring on the usual line of surly idiots who will do what the English do best and try to turn shame into humour.
