They don't care that you don't have the car anymore, they'll still come after you. That ticket didn't die when your car did, in fact it wouldn't die even if you did.
The ticket follows the owner, not the vehicle itself. And you're the owner. If you live where I live, it means you won't be able to get or renew plates for any vehicle you own (ever) until that ticket is cleared up. If you live in a place with more serious laws, it means your car (any car you own) can be booted and / or towed and impounded until the ticket is cleared. In yet other places, you can even lose your driving privileges.
Pay off the ticket, and problem solved.
