What's the difference between balcony, lanai, patio, porch, terrace and veranda?

    balcony - a balustraded or railed elevated platform projecting from the wall of a building.

    lanai - (exclusive) - noun, plural -na·is. Hawaiian .

    a veranda, esp. a fully furnished one used as a living room.

    patio - an area, usually paved, adjoining a house and used as an area for outdoor lounging, dining, etc.

    porch - an exterior appendage to a building, forming a covered approach or vestibule to a doorway.

    terrace - a raised level with a vertical or sloping front or sides faced with masonry, turf, or the like, esp. one of a series of levels rising one above another.

    veranda - (geographical) - Also, ve·ran·dah. Chiefly South Midland and Southern U.S. a large, open porch, usually roofed and partly enclosed, as by a railing, often extending across the front and sides of a house; gallery.

    so a balcony, lanai, terrace and a veranda are the same thing just different geographical location

    a porch is attached and a patio is free space

    just depends upon where you live

    Veranda, balcony, and terrace are names for the outdoor space that is completely accessed by the home only. There are no exterior steps or access by means of the grounds.

    Lanai is a term for a screened or glassed in area that is open to the home and is considered an extension of the interior living space. Think sun room.

    Patio is the name given to the ground defined space by materials ranging from stone to cement. Covered or uncovered it is considered a patio if the ground is the flooring. If however this same space is in the front of the home at the entrance it would be called a Porch. A Porch is the access to the entry.

    Lastly a deck is an added structure to the home that is constructed over the exterior front or back yard but not at ground level.
