We live in a time when the liberal revolution of the 1960s that led to the sexual revolution, the dropping of racial criteria for immigration, the end of Jim Crow and the anti-miscegenation laws, the decriminalization of homosexuality, etc has become a hideously distorted version of the ideals it was meant to serve. It was supposed to guarantee equality for all; but rather it has ended up giving superior consideration to minority groups.
In the West today, in the name of political correctness, multiculturalism, and 'liberalism,' you are free to be proud of your heritage--as long as you are a foreign immigrant and not a native citizen. You are free to create blacks-only scholarships, Black Entertainment Television, Black History Month, affirmative action, or whatnot, but none of those privileges exist if you are white, or you are called a racist. You can have Islam Awareness Week, but not Christianity Awareness Week. When the President comes to speak at a Catholic university, he asks for the Catholic banners and insignias to be covered--but he wouldn't dare make the same request of an Islamic university on American soil. A Christian nurse in Britain was suspended from her work after she offered to pray for a patient's recovery--obviously something that would never have happened if she was a Muslim, or she could have claimed discrimination. Thousands of examples like this abound.
In other words, in the West today, defending Western culture and civilization has become a taboo. Nationalism has become racism. The opinions of a delusional, illogical liberal minority, spread by mainstream media which conforms to their standards of propriety, give you a population the majority of which has no idea what it really is. And national identity goes down the drain.
None of the parties in Europe today represent the interest of their countries. New Labor isn't British, the Christian Democratic Appeal isn't Dutch, the Socialists aren't German. To be a politically correct party in Europe you have to be a 'universalist' party, building your vision on universal values and beliefs, to be acceptable to everyone--more acceptable to those foreigners who come to settle in your country, than to conservative citizens among your own. When the EU drafted its constitution it forbade any reference to Jewish, Christian, or humanist values, or European identity--only 'universal' values and 'universal' identity.
The snag is, universal values don't exist. Everyone disapproves of words like 'extremist,' 'violence,' 'murder,' but these words are subject to a great deal of cultural relativity. I once spoke to a Pakistani who complained of all the racism and negative stereotyping of Muslims. 'Muslims aren't extremists,' he said. I asked him what he thought of Pakistan's blasphemy law, which sentences to death anyone convicted of insulting, criticizing, or even finding fault in Muhammad. He answered of course, anyone who insults the Prophet (PBUH) deserves to be killed. This is an example of cultural relativity; to this Pakistani killing someone for blasphemy isn't extremism, it's just what Islamic law orders; but to you and me it is extremism, because we believe that killing someone for their beliefs is barbaric. This is the peril of believing in 'universal' beliefs, world unity, world government, or any of the like.
People may be equal, but cultures are not. To say that all cultures are equal equates a culture that preaches gay rights, women's rights, freedom of religion, the press, speech, and assembly, and the separation of church and state, with a culture that executes apostates, homosexuals, blasphemers, non-Muslim preachers, stones adulterers to death, flogs teenage fornicators until their backs are raw, and amputates the hands of thieves. This is absurd.
Now, how do we apply this to Israel? We look at what happened to other progressive but controversial states. Rhodesia had a white minority government. It was a wealthy country with law and order, where everyone was well-fed and well-looked after, a rare thing in central Africa. And blacks could vote, if they passed certain educational requirements. But for the politically correct international community, this was not enough--they wanted the vote to be given to any illiterate, uneducated citizen who would murder people convicted of witchcraft. This caused the international community to take the side of black terrorist groups and Marxist rebels, which abolished the white minority government and took over. If you look at Zimbabwe now, it's a mess--hyperinflation, starvation, communism, a 30-year dictatorship--none of which would ever have happened in Rhodesia.
Or you could look at South Africa. Many of the apartheid laws, such as the ones banning interracial marriage, were repealed in the 1980s. It had the biggest economy on the African continent, and the highest standard of living. Yet after the end of the apartheid laws, because of international pressure and sanctions, South Africa now has the highest rape rate in the world, inter-ethnic violence, potholed roads, electricity blackouts, rampant crime, and a new president who is a polygamist with 18 children, has been involved in corruption scandals, and raped an HIV+ woman and said he showered afterward to "prevent infection." All in the name of the modern idea of equality. For the first time, South Africa is no longer a First World country.
Israel is a progressive country. In 60 years it has created the most modern atmosphere in the Middle East. Highest business freedoms, freedom of speech and religion, freedom to criticize the government, a government that actually holds elections and changes its leaders every few years, the highest literacy rate, the only world-ranked universities, the only anti-gay discrimination laws--all of which would be destroyed if the Palestinians ever took over, people who believe in medieval Islamic Shariah and don't have a twentieth-century bone in their bodies. 60 years ago the West supported Israel unanimously, because it was highly culturally and demographically intact; it WAS Western. Yet today the 'progressive' politically correct international community, which is being bent and abused by Communist and Islamist lobbyists, is increasingly trying to dismantle Israel. Look at the UN--an organization that is supposed to protect human rights worldwide. It has been hijacked. It FORBIDS criticism of Shariah or the human rights records of Islamic countries, passes hundreds of resolutions against Israel (7,000 Palestinians killed, including militants and civilians and Palestinians killed by other Palestinians) and maybe one or two against Sudan (200,000 Darfuris killed), it condemns anti-Islamic cartoons and short films more strongly than it condemns the stoning to death of homosexuals in Iran...
I don't know whether Israel will go the way of South Africa or not. What I do know is that not all cultures are equal and that Israel is the most humane, most democratic country in a region that would otherwise resemble a segment of hell on earth. I'm an Egyptian, and Israel has always been a breath of fresh air.
Just a few things may be heartening the spectrum. As long as Israel has a strong military and a strong government, it will survive. South Africa vanished because De Klerk gave up without firing a shot. As long as the Israeli economy is strong despite the boycotts and the sanctions, Israel will survive. The chance of the United States suddenly cutting off all foreign aid to Israel is slim to none, and even then, Israel is not a satellite that revolves around America. Israel has strategic partnerships with many countries. Even fanatical Muslim countries that never would have spoken of recognizing Israel have been exploring diplomatic relations, including Pakistan. The only question right now is what to do with the Palestinians, and this question is an urgent one. If the Palestinians get their own state, the Arab Israelis who hold Hamas flags and scream "Death to the Jews" must be deported, in the face of vehement international criticism. Until the Palestinians get their own state we must concentrate on combatting Palestinian extremism, militarily, ideologically, and economically. Israel will survive. No Arab thought it would exist for more than a few days when it was created. 61 years, in the middle of hundreds of millions of fanatical anti-Semites, is a miracle. David Ben-Gurion once said, to be a realist in Israel, you must believe in miracles. Israel will not stand forever; it will end. Everything ends sometime. Every kingdom, civilization, and religion ends. Islam is strong today, but it will weaken tomorrow, just as it weakened before... this is the law of nature that governs everything. But as long as there is a Jewish will, there WILL be an Israel, and the Jews have lived long enough to see many of the powers that tried to destroy them, wither and disappear themselves. What happened to Babylon, Assyria, Macedonia, Rome? The same will happen to Islam. Muslims will not destroy the Jews, the Jews will outlive them.
