root word " bayan" meaning town/municipality

being kababayan in the Philippine context means belong to the same bayan, province, hence the english translation is townmate

when we go overseas however, it is used in a larger scale, instead of town, it now refers to the country. so when you say "mga kababayan" it means "fellow countrymen"

It literally means "town mate" but is often used to refer to the country as well. My wife sometimes says "kababayan?" to Filipino-looking people here in the UK.

BAYAN = a community, but can generally mean Town or Nation depending on context.

KABABAYAN = depending on context, can mean Town mate when used in talking about a fellow from the same hometown. But can also mean fellow countryman when speaking about people of the same race or nationality abroad.

    English translation of KABAYAN is:

    Brother or Bro....

Like; "Wassup Bro'?" in Tagalog "'musta Kabayan?"
