Compare the poor in America to the poor around the world. Totally different poverty. You have to exclude people who cannot at all fend for themselves: kids, mentally retarded, etc. Most Americans are poor because they have poor money management habits. I know people who make $100K a year, but live way above their means. I make a modest amount of money, but am smart with my money. I own my car and the only debt I have is my mortgage. I paid off my student loans in a few years. I do not buy things I do not need.
Poverty is a mindset. It is also contagious. We have American poverty in out inner city, predominantly black and hispanic neighborhoods because poverty festers. You are who you associate with. When all around you talk like street people and listen to that garbage rap music, it grows on you. Our government run schools are criminally allowed to get away with pathetic education. Solution: privatization. Competition produces results.
I also have sold in people's homes and people in inner cities may be poor, but they always have a big screen tv and some of the finer things.
As for the person who said "there is definitely poverty here, and its sad that 10% of the population have 90% of the money," there is a reason for it. People who earn wealth do more of the things that earn them wealth. Poor people continue to do the things that got them in poverty in the first place. When you have a foul mouth, bad attitude, and lack a work ethic, you will stay poor. I am not saying all poor are like this, but I have earned everything I have and there are never excuses out of my mouth.
