So I went out to eat with 4 of my friends at this sushi restaurant. When the bill came, I noticed there was gratuity added. Now on the menu, it says "gratuity added to parties of 6 or more". There were only 5 of us. So my friend asks a manager about it and he goes "It's mandatory for parties of 6 or more but anything less, it's at the waiter's discretion to decide." (this was not written on the menu) Umm wtf does that even mean. Like how can the waiter determine who to add gratuity on and who not to for parties under six? Would this offend you or am I overreacting?

Why aren't restaurants pressured to pay their staff a living wage and offer menu items at higher prices to afford that? I'll occasionally buy a $10 meal but if prices went up to $20 then they wouldn't see me at all. It's annoying that this pressure exists. I'm a math tutor and I never get additional pay for simply doing my job. On most days I take out, specifically to avoid the whole tipping situation, but sometimes I need to eat at the venue. I don't like how tipping is open ended and would rather it be already added to my bill, so i didn't have to think about it. I don't care about service, I just want my meal. It doesn't mean anything if a server is nice, timely, and etc because that is simply them doing their job. The idea of them throwing a hissy fit for not getting a special favor from me when they should be complaining to their bosses or seeking a career change is childish to me. Not everyone is a big roller and can drop $10 or $20s+ in tips. If I could afford it, no problem. But because I can't often afford the additional cost that doesn't mean I'm going to go hungry. That's what separates me from choosing one restaurant or another. Price. To ask for a lower price on paper but a larger price in actuality is them trying to swindle me into thinking I'm getting a good deal. A customer is better than no customer.

It sounds like you went to two different places. One for the food and another for the drink. If that was the case, he was mad that you went to a different food court for you food then just got a drink from him perhaps using some of his stuff for your food. Otherwise he was having a bad day.
