American Megatrends BIOS v205. If I need to upgrade the BIOS to do this, I may need a little help - or at least a link to how to do this. OK, I have flashed BIOSes in the past, but that was in the days of floppy disks!!! Thanks!

    - Lookup one of the games you intend to play and check out its "Minimum" and "Recommended" requirements! Write those down and look for laptops with those specs and see what price range they fall into. However, I think you've greatly misjudged the laptop market at a price range of $300.00.

The HARD WAY to answer your own question:
    - Pick a price, then try to fit a system into that price!

    Good luck out there!

The thing is, they aren't very useful for a lot more than that. You've got to jump through hoops to run any other programs on them and they usually don't have the hard drive space to store much more than the programs they came with.

As for the Windows laptop, it'll probably be slower than the Chromebook, but you'll be able to install Windows programs and such.

The way to get a laptop to last a long time is first, don't install the junk and malware that old laptops are always buried with. Second, get it an SSD. A fast SSD drive is a great way to make an old laptop usable for much longer because it won't take as long to load programs you need.

Best answer: If you would get an 8th generation CPU (i5 or i7) with 16gig of RAM, you would have a computer that would get you through 4 yrs of school.

Of the choices, I would prefer the XPS13. I am now using a 4th generation Toshiba i7 with 16 gig RAM that is approx 5 yrs old. It was a very good system when I bought it. I'm happy with the performance today. No program in MS Office is going to tax this system. That's most of what you will be doing.

Now, your budget will determine how good a system you can get. Remember, you are buying a system that you hope will last all 4 years.

EDIT: Screen size- my present laptop is a 17". I would never get this size again. It's too big and I was very limited in the bags that I could get for this size screen. I would probably get a 15" today although many people are opting for 13". My only concern is the smaller the PC, the more apt it is to be thrown around or mistreated or stolen.

EDIT2: I have gone through a few batteries and a couple of chargers in 5 years. It was the connector on the end of the charger that failed. It wouldn’t stay connected. These can be considered wear and tear items. You don’t have to get 16 gig of ram now. It can always be added later on the XPS.
