Best answer: It's all about learning about the larger world we live in, the Solar System. Dinosaurs walked the Earth for 65 million years, until their end was hastened by a collision with a rock from space. The more we learn about where we live, the better our chances of ultimate survival. Beyond that, what greater purpose do we have other than collecting knowledge that may benefit other in the future? Granted, exploring Pluto won't have the same effect on current humanity than learning how to make fire, but knowledge is the only true gift we can pass down to our descendants. Buildings crumble, knowledge doesn't, and it's impossible to predict in advance the value of any research we do.

While it's about the most unlikely outcome I can think of, what if we were to find a crippled interstellar spaceship stranded on some distant part of the Solar System, possibly sitting there in a parking orbit around Pluto or another distant object? What a loss it would be to struggle on for 10,000 years trying to find a faster and cheaper way to travel to the stars other than generation ships, until we finally sent a probe to Pluto in the year 12,255 to find the answer sitting there? Will that ever realistically happen? No. But the point is, we don't know what we might discover until we go and look. So, we took a couple of hundred million dollars and bought a probe to Pluto instead of one more B-2 bomber. Is that a bad thing? I certainly don't think so.

EDIT: While you didn't raise the point of cost, askers, I and others did. Actually, the total cost of the New Horizons mission, including all operational costs, is $675 million. (And contrary to what some people seem to think, all of that money stayed on Earth, except for the materials of the probe itself, and those of the upper stage rocket that launched it.) By comparison, the B-2 bomber program cost the United States $44.75 billion dollars, which is to say, if we called that $44 billion, the rounding error is more than enough to pay for New Horizons. The unit cost of a single B-2 bomber was $737 million, more than the New Horizons probe. So for those who say this is a waste of money, well, what more can I say? What will benefit humanity more a thousand years from now, more obsolete warplanes sitting in a museums or scrapyards, or the knowledge passed down to future generations about the world in which we live?

I have numerous friends, too many to count, who were rejected by hot women in their 20's however ended up being with those very same women in their 40's. A close friend of mine ended up being with my ex-girlfriend from high school and she used to hate him. He ended up dumping her (she was 46) but shouldn't this reality be acknowledged and planned for instead of denied?

  • Should the age of consent be lowered to 16 for all states?

Best answer: Yes, having the age of consent being 17 or 18 is crazy in the modern American. Most kids in urban areas are active by the age of 15. We should not be putting young men in prison for having sex with 17 or 18 year old girls who want sex.
