• Christmas present ideas for mom?

My mom is literally the hardest human to shop for. 1. She doesn't have any hobbies. 2. She doesn't like wearing jewelry. 3. She doesn't like using bath products. 4. She doesn't like anything on her skin (no lotion, no perfume, no makeup, etc.) 5. She doesn't listen to any music whatsoever (so albums or concert tickets are not an option) 6. She doesn't play any games, other than bubble pop on her phone. 7. She, I'd say, has everything she needs (clothes, home appliances, etc.) My mom literally tries to live as natural as possible with very little modernization. We do celebrate Christmas and with gift exchanging, she always gets me presents, it wouldn't be right to not get her a single thing this year. But I am completely out of ideas on what to get her. Last year, I got her coffee mugs, year before I got her a framed wall painting, I want to give her something different this year, but what?!

We celebrate Hanukkah around that time which commemorates when the Assyrians invaded Israel, they ransacked the Temple and banned Jewish practices, and Judah Maccabee led a revolt and overthrew them. When they went to light to Menorah, which could only be lit with special pure olive oil, they found that there was only enough oil to last 1 day, and it took 7 days to purify more oil. The oil lasted for 7 days until new oil was ready, which is the miracle of Hanukkah.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, enjoy the holiday season!

Maybe some of y’all know some good gifts or gift sets or websites or stores that have good stuff for good prices. Another question, fitbits. Anyone know a good brand that doesn’t cost over $40? Is it just me or does Christmas just show up out of no where?! 😂 Thanks ☺️

  • The sorrow of Thanksgiving and Christmas and the rejection from my own family has begun. How does one cope with this dark season?

Something that might help to chase away the blues would be to notice when something makes you sigh and smile with happiness and start keeping a list of those things. Then start your own holidays from the list that you can celebrate any time you want.

For example: Taco night, Clean Sheet Night, stop into your favorite used bookstore and have Stephen King and long bath night.

Whatever makes you smile can become your household's new traditions to replace all that baggage-y stuff.

    Good luck.

  • My Dad threw my Mom down the stairs for Christmas shopping last weekend when they don't have money. Why won't she call the police on him?

In an ideal world, your dad would be out on the street and you and your mom would be safe on your own but it doesn't always work out that way. Just be there for her and support her and encourage her to see that there could be a better life without your dad around.

There are many kids in my family - nieces and nephews. I'll appreciate gift ideas that are not too costly. Because I only know what to prepare for adult family members. Thanks.

  • I am dreading Christmas and Thanksgiving. How do I work through this dread so I am not miserable until January?

    Best answer: :) Been there.

    You get used to it.

And one day... when you finally get back together again with their side, it almost feels unnatural. You count the seconds until you're home again.

Well... last year, my dad died. And fate brought us back together again with moms side of the family. As much resentment I had towards them... I saw more clearly than ever.

Moms side was the only side where majority of the family showed up at his funeral. :) Not only did they show up, they did all of the leg work in preparing and seeing it thru. :'(

Needless to say, I've cut off all of my million and 1 relatives except for moms side. :)

Now? It's just a matter of getting re-acquainted. We have our ups and downs. But... after decades of fighting with moms side, it feels like the family is as complete as it was before we split. :o)

Moral of the long story: You'll find yourself back together again with your moms side. Especially, for funerals.

So... make the best of your time and experience WITHOUT moms side of the family, until that time. Your skills/experience in spending time in survival mode, comes in handy.

Good luck, my dear. I actually DID enjoy the experience of those Christmases in survival mode. I'm sure they'll toughen you up too.

    Cheers.

And even then, until the mid-1800s Christmas celebrations were looked down upon by religious folk. It was banned in the US initially. Churches would close on Christmas to discourage drunken revelry.

Now Christmas has become for many more of a cultural celebration-- most people grew up enjoying some kind of traditions involving dinners, decorations, presents, tv specials, music, etc. Just like Christians who adopted the Pagan solstice celebrations & traditions but left behind any worship of Pagan Gods, secularists and people of other faiths like to adopt celebrations and traditions but leave out the worship of Jesus.
