Best answer: Many early civilizations began in river valleys--the Indus valley, the Tigris and Euphrates, and the Nile. The river provided water of course, and fertile soil, and transportation. The Nile valley was one of the better ones. Every year the Nile rose and flooded its banks, depositing another layer of rich silt from upstream. The valley was divided into 'red land', where the Nile flooded and 'black land' where the land was barren and lifeless. It's said that the line was so sharp that you could stand with one foot on the red land and one on the black land.

The Nile Valley was surrounded by impassable desert, so Egypt was protected from invasion because no armies could get across the desert. That contributed to it being the longest uninterrupted civilization. 3000 years! The US has been here only 250 years and we're ready to pack it in! And we're the oldest continuous modern country in the world today!

The red land in Egypt was so fertile that Egypt was also the richest country. They traded grain all over the Middle East back in the day. When the Romans took over Egypt it was the richest of their provinces and the breadbasket of all of Europe! And being a rich country meant that they could spend time on art, literature, medicine, culture, and building pyramids.
