If your mom actually wants to give up soda, she should wean herself off of it. Try an alternative like flavored seltzer. It has the carbonation but none of the sugar. Gradually, over the course of like a week or two, replace more servings of soda with seltzer until she no longer craves sugary drinks. At that point, its best to incorporate as much plain water as possible and treat seltzer as a treat when she's looking for something more than just plain old water.

Best answer: You don't HAVE to drink plain water. Anyone who says you do is ignorant. A lot of rubbish is talked about this and being "hydrated".

ALL soft drinks are almost entirely water. So it all counts. Drink what you like, whether it be coffee, tea, fruit juice, flavoured water, Coke... your body still sees the water in it. It's almost like how a chemical laboratory would look at the drink - analyse what's in it and it's almost all water plus tiny amounts of whatever else is in there.

What else is in any of these drinks and whether that's good for you is another question.

So what's your pleasure? If it tastes nice, enjoy! And remember that what your body doesn't need goes straight through, so too much just means longer in the bathroom.

Just out of historical interest, what used to be done in medieval England was everyone, including children, drank "ale" - a weak beer. Every village had its alewife who brewed it. The point was that you couldn't trust water from the river to be safe, but use it to make ale and the alcohol would kill off any bugs. So that gave people a safe drink,. They never drank plain water either and lived perfectly well on it. We're lucky these days that water is purified so we can trust it!
