Is this a good photo of my dog?

I do realize I've made a mistake with the chair leg next to her. But ignoring that what else?

or do you think this one is better?

Both of those are VASTLY better than the stuff we usually see.

Some things you did VERY well are:

1) You blurred the background
2) you placed her off centre
3) you took the photo from HER level (super important).

Excellent start!

To improve you should have:

1) paid closer attention the background and distracting elements such as that chair leg
2) kept your horizon straight
3) used a fill flash! (very important....... would have made a big difference)
4) tweaked it a little in your image editor.... especially the first one is sort of "hazy" - a little tweak of curves/levels/contrast would fix that.

Great start.... keep improving.

It depends what level of skill you have really. So I would say that the first one is the weakest but you pointed that out already so you have a good idea of what is wrong.

If you're still new to this I would say they're very good. You have lovely DOF and good composition.
The biggest thing to work on would probably be post editing. You can crop the image tighter and make light adjustments using levels and the dodge and burn tools.

    Very sweet photos :)
I would give, 7/10 for the first one and 8/10 for the second

you need better light on the dog.. the background is distracting because is it lighter...

crop the images... and work on straightening the lines (vertical verticals)...
