Why do you think there are so many people who do not believe in a God--a personal God?

That is a question that I received through email very recently. For a number of months due to other obligations I have been unable to participate in R&S very often, and even when I was here regularly I seldom asked questions, mostly just answered them. I will be answering that question for the one who sent it to me, but I decided to put it here because I am curious to see what other people have to say. I thought it was a very good question.

I will try to get back and choose Best Answer, but I am not promising I will be able to. I apologize in advance, just in case.

Have at it!

Because it is only Christianity that has drummed up the need as well as a presence of a personal human-like God. In the Eastern concept of God, God is not human-like. God is plain éverything-like' if I may so use the words. God is formless and yet all the forms in creation are the various aspects of God. Eastern religious concepts and philosophy try to take you from the form to the formless. As an example, when it is sarcastically pointed out that there are 330 million Gods in Hinduism, in effect it is an affirmation that in Hinduism every single form in creation -be it of a living or non-living being - is a formulate of the one God (that has no second).

Because religions are often awful off-putting organisations many of who's own members are not Godly. People with limited thinking will just switch of when presented with wrong or stupid argument. Instead of ignoring the balls and coming to an unbiased opinion.lp

Some people just feel like there is no evidence and others don't want to believe in a God because they don't want to be held accountable for their actions.

A hypothetical personal God is an extremely unlikely idea, to the point of being unbelievably silly, if you think about it for a moment.

The universe appears to contain billions of galaxies, trillions of stars and planets, yet some people believe a hypothetical creator deity made all that, just so it could have a place for one species of nearly hairless apes to live in and interact, so that this hypothetical creator deity could watch each one of them and keep track of all of their actions, thoughts, beliefs and choices. And it hypothetically does so, just to be able to judge them, after they die, and decide if each of them gets infinite reward or infinite torture, which, could not possibly be deserved, in either case.

But, of course such ideas are obviously just an expression of human ego, vanity and an emotional need to feel more important in a vast and uncaring universe, not something that the universe suggests about us or to us. Only those with a childish view of their own self importance can hold such a silly belief.
