What is a good tutorial for 3D modeling and animating?

Question

I want to be able to create highly detailed 3D models by myself and make short movies. I want to know what's a good place to get started and where to go from there. And some programs for getting started. I know DAZ3D, Poser, and Photoshop. What else would you find essential?

Blender. (It's really good and free!) I think Milkshape might help too, but it's been a long time since I've used it.
