How to prevent my knee from popping out at dance or when I do my splits?
Last year when I was dancing, I seriously popped out my knee doing a chenais turn. I couldn't walk for a couple days. Then a couple months later, while doing my center split, my knee popped out again, and I couldn't walk again. Since then, I haven't seriously popped it out again, but sometimes when I'm dancing or doing my splits, I can feel it starting to move out of place, but I catch it in time. It hurts so much when it happens, and it's scary and it's realy staring to discourage me from dancing. I asked my podiatrist about it, and he said it's "normal". Like no, I'm 14. I don't think my joints should be popping out of place. What should I do?!?
Sounds like your knee cap (patella) is moving out of place (dislocating). Ask your parents to take you to your doctor for an examination; make sure you tell how often it's happened and how often you feel it starting to move out of place. Ask for a referral to a sports medicine doctor/ clinic.
In the meantime, you can strengthen the muscles on the inside of of your leg. Check out the links for some exercises and information about patellar dislocation. Good luck and keep dancing.
