Why do people pace when they are on the phone?

I always notice that a ton of people do this, and it seems to be an unconcious thing, sort of like twirling your hair. Today I caught myself doing it. Does anyone know what part of the brain initiates this kind of thing and why?

I think it's cause conversing with someone on the phone isn't actually a natural thing for us to do.
part of conversing with someone isn't just hearing what they're saying, it's their body language, and facial expressions that help us understand someones intent or real meaning when they're saying something. i think our brains just make up for the lack of this sort of interaction when we're on the phone by pacing or fidgeting!

i always somehow manage to find things i've lost when i'm on the phone! without having any recollection of where or when i found it afterwards! haha! very bizarre!
hope this is helpful! this isn't scientifically proven by the way! just my perception :)

My dad does that all the time. I guess sometimes people do it when they get excited or nervous on the phone. It may help people concentrate or do something with their emotions.
