What happened? What we today would call a "light bulb moment."
He realized that instead of persecuting a sect that everyone else had pretty much given up on anyway, he could hijack their story, create a cult of personality and use it to make himself powerful.
The same basic mindset that televangelists use today. Religion is not a means to an end, it becomes the means AND the end.

Jesus: The physician should be among the sick.
Paul: Avoid sinners, so that you are not tempted.
Jesus: A tree is judged by its fruit.
Paul: You are saved by grace, not by works.
You tell me. Which is Christianity, and which is not?

Jesus appeared to paul in a blinding light, convincing him that he was the Messiah. (Acts 22:6-1) The bible says he fell to the ground. What ever physical fall he experienced was not nearly so great has the fall from the pride of his position. He had to recognize that Jesus followers were preaching what was truth. The only course open to Paul was to join them. From a militant foe of Jesus message, Paul became one of its staunchest proponents. After gaining his sight and getting baptized, Paul went on acquiring power all the more and was confounding the Jews that dwelt in Damascus as he proved logically the this is the Christ (Act 9:22)

For Paul, old name was Saul who was earlier against all the followers Jesus Christ.
Many Miracles happened!
1)Jesus blocked the journey of Saul.
2)Saul became blind.
3)Jesus talked to Saul.
4)Saul talked to Jesus.
5)Jesus replied to Saul's Questions.
6)Saul was sent to Ananyas(prayer warrior).
7)Ananyas prayed for Saul, and his eyes opened.
8)Old name Saul was replaced with a new name PAUL and became a new born spiritual person.
9)A Jew Saul became an Evangelist Paul for Christ.
10)Jews knew that Saul was converted and many Jews started following Jesus Christ through messages of Paul.

He was not Paul at the time but Saul.
He was confronted by a bright light in which Jesus asked him, why he was persecuting him. He asked him who he was and Jesus said he was Jesus Christ. He was struck blind for 3 days, until Ananias was instructed to go and lay hands on him. Saul became a vessel for Jesus, and later became Paul.

He was Blinded by the light
He got knocked off his "high horse"
He was spoken to in a way that only GOD does when HE speaks to someone about to get a mission.
And he was led to a place where people knew who who he "was" and they had to trust that GOD changed him.
-
The Lord spoke to him, revealed himself to him. Then put scales on his eyes so he could not see but told him where to go to get them removed so a prophecy fulfilled.
Once you meet with the Master your never the same Saul became Paul or persecutor became preacher.
