Negotiating on craigslist for dirt bike?

Ok I have wanted a dirt bike for ever and I found an 03 rm250 and I found the kelly blue book is $1,245 and the guy is asking $1,300... I can only really pay around $1,000 dollars for it... how do you think I could get him down? It also has a blown engine and needs a $140 part... so obviously used alot.

Additional Details

The part it needs is a cylinder sleeve. rm250 cylinder sleeves are around $140

KBB (which started with cars and isn't really clued into bikes yet) lists $1245......
Thing is, KBB assumes it runs.
He's asking more....needing motor work?

Negotiating happens in person. Craigslist is an ad service, just like the newspaper used to be.
You shouldn't negotiate, you should look elsewhere.

EDIT , Then that means it also needs machining , a piston and rings and a full set of top end gaskets ,,, as well as someone that knows how to assemble it properly .

You'd be a fool to offer a dime for a bike sight unseen and without a written work order from a shop as to the cost of the required repairs.

$140.00 does not buy much in the way of engine repairs..

For example ,,, the crank bearings might be $140,00 and it could be $500,00 to split the cases , change the bearings and rebuild the motor .

If you can't start the bike for all you know the transmission could be fried too.

you obviously dont know 2 strokes to well, the engine will break down about once per year which means it needs a new top end, not a big deal, and you can say i can give you 900 for it and when he says no say hey listen, i will give you all the money i have witch is 1000 for a bike with a broke engine that im gonna have to put time and money into, thats litteraly all the money i have right now.

If it needs a sleeve, it needs a full rebuild. Unless you can do that yourself, the repairs are worth more than the bike.

$1300 is a good price for a RUNNING bike with a few minor issues.

The bike you described is worth $300 in parts, or someone mechanical could pay up to maybe $750 and do their own work and come out with a fair deal.

I flag those kinds of ads so hopefully they get removed. I consider someone trying to rip of rookies and kids as a scammer. And that guy is trying to rip someone off.
