Do glasses really help correct your vision?

I am 14 years old and in the 9th grade and wear glasses. I believe I am a -8.50. in the 4th grade i used to be -5 or somewhere around that. I know that my vision is still changing as I grow. But i want to know the truth because my optometrist tells me that the more I wear my glasses, the better my vision WITHOUT glasses will be. Is this true?

Additional Details

I have astigmatism.

Hi, I don't think so. Eyeglasses is just a device to help you see clear when you wearing it. But it don't have the function to cure your vision problems. Nevetheless, we can not deny that eyeglasses are very improtant to people with vision problems. Now, I saw an online optical shop Firmoo.com who offer free glasses on facebook on Facebook. This is really a good news for people with vision problems.

    No, that is not true.

Your nearsightedness and astigmatism are caused by your eye being of a shape that prevents it from focusing correctly. Glasses bend the light so your eyes can focus correctly, so you can see better while you have them on, but that's all they do. They do not change the shape of your eyes so that your vision will be better without glasses.

If that's really what your optometrist told you, I suggest you find a new one. Either that, or you misunderstood what he/she said.

Not for me.... I think glasses are crutches for your eyes. Try googling eye excersices to improve your vision.

I don't buy it. It's just a trick to get kids to wear their glasses.
