I received an abnormal Pap Smear and...?
I got a phone call from the gynecologist office today and they told me I needed to come in next week in regards to my pap smear results and that the doctor was going to perform a procedure on me.
I'm assuming they mean a colposcopy when they say procedure. This was my first pap smear, and I'm 23. I'm extremely nervous about all of this.
I obviously need to go in to get my results and whatnot, but what on earth could be the problem? What results would trigger the need for a colposcopy?

HPV might be the cause of your abnormal pap smear. Don't begin to worry until you have your results.

you may have HPV. Exposure to HPV can cause abnormal cells to grow on your cervix which can prompt a colposcopy. By the time women are 50 years old, 80% of us have been exposed to HPV at some point, so it's not unusual. You just need to make sure to follow up on your appointments.... But this is a question for your doctor really, so make sure to ask when you go in for it. good luck

May have found something abnormal and tissue a biopsy to get more details.
I had to get it done due to abnormal tissue growth.
